If you have decided to utilise social media to grow your business, then building a following will be your number one goal.
Today I will share with you the difference between having a following and a tribe. And what you should focus on if you are just starting building your following and your audience on social media. So without further ado, let’s jump right into today’s topic. Let’s start with very simple definitions.
What is a follower?
A follower is somebody who hits the subscribe or follow button on your profile because they liked your content.
Your followers don’t always see your content
The way social media are built, they are encouraging content creators to create content and gain some followers. It’s nice to say that you have 1000 people or more following you, but it is not nearly enough when it comes to building a successful online business. The first thing that you want to do on social media is build your following.
First of all, just because somebody is following you doesn’t mean that they will see your content regularly. Unfortunately, most social media out there want us to pay to be able to be seen by more people although social media is free for the users, they make money through advertising.
That’s why the more a social media platform grows, the less organic reach you can have. So that’s why even if you have 1000 followers, only a few of them will see your content regularly. This is why your following may grow, but it doesn’t mean that your income or your business will grow proportionally.
3 tips for your audience to see your content
Ask them to hit the notification bell
When a follower hits the notification bell it means that they want to be informed every time you post a new piece of content. It’s important to ask your audience to hit the notification bell. If they don’t, it may be as if they are not following you. If they don’t: they might see your content pop up once in a while. But if they don’t remember who you are, they might unfollow you.
Remember not all your followers will engage with your content
Also, just because somebody decided to follow you doesn’t mean that they will start engaging with you and your content. Hitting the Follow button is a very simple action. But just because someone did that doesn’t mean that you are going to have a relationship. It’s only the first step. But like any relationship, you must maintain it to build trust, connect with them and interact with them. You will have to make them come back.
Don’t focus on building a following, focus on building your tribe
First of all, what is a social tribe? Your tribe is made of people who are waiting impatiently for your new content. They engage with you, they like what you’re doing. They relate to you and your content. They are your ideal clients who you can help with your services. Your tribe are your main ambassador. They are going to share your content to engage with it. They will be loyal fans and followers.
And so whenever you have something to offer, they will be the first ones to know about it and talk about it. I liked the term social tribe because this is your community of people who are people that you know very well. They always interact with you and vice versa. You know what challenges they are facing and you create content that helps them get quick wins.
Whenever they are ready to invest in themselves to get the full solution, that’s when they will come back to you. Because of the value that you deliver on a daily or weekly basis.
Why is having a tribe important?
These are the people you want to focus on. And so there are three main reasons why you should build a social tribe, instead of just focusing on gaining more followers.
1. Reason number one: Sell with ease.
So if you are somebody who doesn’t want to be pushy, when it comes to pitching your services, then building a social tribe will help you sell with ease. You will be selling to your ideal clients who are ready to buy. And that is the main difference with followers, you don’t have to convince them to buy or to convince them of the value of your services. They already know it because they have been following you for a while, right. And so this sale is a no brainer for them if you targeted their main pain point.
2. Reason number two: Attain sustainable growth.
Instead of chasing virality and vanity metrics, what you want is that each person that follows you then joins your tribe and becomes an engaged follower. So you should value every one of these followers.
As soon as they start following you, not only when you reach 1000 followers or more, right, if you wait until then to start nurturing the relationship, it will be too late. People are not going to remember you, as we said before, and they already lost interest in engaging with you. So that’s why you have to focus on that from the start.
When somebody follows you, make sure you start building a relationship with them and value the individual.
Not only the entire following that you have that way each follower becomes a potential client. To grow your business, you don’t have to focus on a specific number, you just have to focus on reaching the right people.
3. More content, more followers, more engagement.
It will be easier for you to create content and get feedback from your community and the people who are following you, people who you know, like and trust, you will have no problem answering your questions. For example, if you want to create something new, they will be happy to help you understand what type of content you should create, and what type of services they will be willing to buy from you because you already built this support and trust. That way, you don’t have to guess what your ideal client wants right now. If you already have a very engaged social tribe, it doesn’t matter how many people are in this tribe, as long as they are your ideal clients, they like what you are doing, and they find it valuable. Alright, that’s it for today’s episode. I hope you enjoyed it and found it valuable. If you did, give me a thumbs up, or comment to tell me your opinion about it.
